Lapsang Souchong is an elegant black tea smoke-dried over a pinewood fire. Its flavor and aroma are described as containing empyreumatic notes, including wood smoke, pine resin, smoked paprika, and dried longan.
According to legend, in the mid-17th century, villagers were forced to hide their harvest of fresh tea from an invading army. When the army left, the tea needed to be dried quickly to reach the market on time. The villagers used open fires of pine wood to dry the tea leaves. At the market, the Dutch loved this new specialty tea and Lapsang Souchong was born.
Our premium Lapsang Souchong hails from Taiwan (rather than mainland China), specifically from Nantou County, and is regarded as one of the world's finest Lapsangs. It makes a very smooth and deep flavorful cup of tea with mild hints of pine and oak fire.
Lapsang Souchong is best enjoyed hot and unsweetened.
